Vajravarahi

VajravarahiThe Vajaravarahi / Bajara Barahi is described in the Purana Nepal-Mahatmya. It is mentioned in the story about how Bhringhi, as Gunadhya circumambulated the sacred valley and got back his divine powers a translation as one of the holy places you should visit. This story of the Nepal-Mahatmya is translated from Sanskrite into English in the book the Glory of Nepal by William P. Forbes.

The Vajaravarahi temple is located in a small forest east of Chapagaon / Techo.  The main entrance of temple complex has some signboards in Nepali and a list of birds that can be found in the surrounding forrest. Though you can enter the the temple complex from several sides. And can also be reached from Godavari Village Resort. Follow the paved black topped road down to Lele and take the first road right. (at the end of the sharp downhill), after the bridge immediately turn left. You keep on folowing this road (some steep uphill).  You pass some villages and then come in an open space with a beautiful view over the Lele Valley and down a mine if you drive a little bit furter you will see the first gates of the temple complex.

In short the Bhringhi story goes as follows. Bhringhi transformed himself into a bee to hear a secret story that Shiva was telling Parvati (his wife). Shiva finds out and sends Bhringhi to earth as a human being. After having a very dedicated live Bhringhi has to circuambulate all the main temples of the Katmandu Valley and finish with making a lingam. And so does Bhringhi, Shiva is very pleased with his dedication and makes Bhringhi devine again.

The Vajaravarahi is only described briefly (Vajravarhi who is saluted by all the Gods) and as a stop between the Anantalingam (near Bhaktapur) and Bharabhuteshvara (Near Godawari).

The Vajaravarahi is still called like this or spelled as Bajara Barahi and seems to be an importent Shiva temple.
