Ganesh son of Shiva - Kathmandu Valley
Ganesh
the Elephant headed son of Shiva and Parvati is believed to stroll in Prakanda
forrest which is believed to be in the Kathmandu Valley in the form of
Suryavinayaka (Ganesha of the Sun). Ganesh returned to the forrest after leaving
it because he was upset with Shiva because he felt forgotten while Shiva had
such a good time in the Shleshmantaka forrest (which is opposite of the
Pashupatinath temple in Kathmandu. To feel importent again Ganesh secretly killed a child who
could only be made alive by him. The very sad parents of the boy who didn't know
this, turned to Shiva for help. Shiva goes in meditation and sees what happened.
He tells the parents to call Ganesh for help and so they do. Ganesh appears and
gives advice about the right medicine to bring the boy back to live. Ganesh
helps to apply the medicine (juice from vine) and the boy is alive again. The
parents and munis ask Ganesh to stay in the forrest and he prommises to do so.
The Suryavinayaka temple is found on a hill south of Bakthapur.
In the photo you see a statue of Ganesh in a Shiva temple
